A powerful storm system swept across the northeastern United States on Tuesday, placing millions of residents under tornado watches stretching from Delaware through Philadelphia and New York City to upstate New York. Meteorologists warned that multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms could bring dangerous weather throughout the afternoon and evening.
New Jersey experienced multiple tornado warnings as the storms intensified. Officials also reported at least two tornadoes, with one touching down in northeastern Pennsylvania and another in northwestern New Jersey.
In addition to the tornado threat, forecasters warned of destructive wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph, large hail, and torrential rainfall capable of exceeding one inch per hour. The combination of intense rain and saturated ground significantly increased the risk of flash flooding across the region.
The Interstate 95 corridor—including Philadelphia, New York City, and parts of Connecticut—was identified as one of the areas facing the greatest flood danger, with authorities urging residents to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.
The severe weather extended well beyond the Northeast. Thunderstorm watches remained in effect from Kentucky to Pennsylvania, covering major cities such as Charleston, West Virginia; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Tennessee also faced an elevated risk of flooding as the storm system continued moving east.
The approaching storms caused widespread disruption to air travel. More than 1,900 flights were canceled on Tuesday, with airports serving New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., experiencing the heaviest impact. Ground stops were also implemented at several major airports, including those in New York City, Washington, Boston, and Baltimore.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to remain alert and follow safety guidance as severe weather approached.
He advised New Yorkers to seek shelter immediately during thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, or strong winds. Residents living in basement apartments were encouraged to identify emergency exits and be prepared to move to higher floors if flooding develops.
The latest weather emergency comes only days after New York City endured heavy rainfall that flooded streets and disrupted transportation over the weekend, raising concerns that Tuesday’s storms could bring renewed flooding.
Iowa Also Hit by Dangerous Flooding
While the Northeast prepared for severe weather, Iowa was already dealing with its own emergency. Heavy rainfall triggered dangerous flooding in Des Moines on Monday night, leaving nearly two dozen vehicles stranded on flooded roads.
According to the Des Moines Police Department, emergency responders rescued five people trapped by rising floodwaters.
Des Moines Police Chief Michael McTaggart urged motorists to remain cautious, encouraging drivers to slow down, stay aware of rapidly changing road conditions, and prioritize safety during the ongoing severe weather.
